The mid-17th century, apart from the relativelybloodless campaign of 1644-1645, is a periodof peace for Transylvania. It brought politicalsuccess but exposed all the deficiencies of thearmy. Also, it was too short to “educate” newcommanders and allow the old ones to gainexperience. Many higher commanders had noexperience in commanding larger forces, oftenthey also lacked the necessary talent. Commandersof seregs and mercenary captainswere good soldiers but never led larger forcesinto combat and were unable to coordinate infantry,artillery and cavalry.
